Mountain excursion in India

India is protected by some of the most beautiful and impressive mountain peaks in the world. At the northernmost border, the Himalayas stand tall. The three highest mountain peaks in the world belong to the Himalayas. The highest mountain peak in India is Kanchanjunga, a part of the Himalayas, which is the third highest peak in the world. The second highest peak in India is Nanda Devi, located in the state of Uttarakhand in northern India. The mountains of India host some of the most beautiful tourist destinations, such as Kashmir, often referred to as “paradise on earth.” The most beautiful areas of Kashmir are Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Patnitop. In addition to Kashmir, other important mountain destinations include Pangong Lake, Khardungla Pass, Nubra Valley, Thiksey Monastery, Shey Monastery or Shey Palace, Hemis and Phyang Monasteries in Ladakh, Dharamsala and Mcleodganj (the Dalai Lama’s headquarters), Khajiar, Shimla, and more in Himachal Pradesh, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Uttarkashi, the Valley of Flowers, Hemkunt Sahib in Uttarakhand, Gangtok, Pelling, and Zuluk in Sikkim, Darjeeling in West Bengal, Shillong in Meghalaya (also known as the “Scotland of the East”), to name just a few.

World-famous mountain railways, which have been designated as World Heritage Sites, also connect major tourist destinations in the mountains.

India offers a unique opportunity to see and experience the mountains up close, both in the north and east of the country.
