South India has been the first point of entry to India by foreign visitors for centuries due to sea passage it offers being surrounded by Arabian Sea on the Southwest, Indian Ocean on the south and Bay of Bengal towards South East. Many foreign invaders, navigators and travellers entered in to India through Southern part only, the most famous of them is Vasco da Gama from Portugal who landed in Calicut a part of present day Kerala on 20th May 1498. South of India today comprises of the states of Kerala, Tamilnadu, Telangaga, Andhra Pradesh & Karnataka along with the union territories of Puduchery (Pondicherry) and Lakshwadweep. While European navigators and invaders entered India through Southern Coast, Muslims entered India through northern part. Hence in South India, the Muslim influence is quite limited as compared to the North India.
In the past few decades South India grew prominently in the tourist map of the country as well. On a trip to south India, one can visit the historic cities of Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram), Kanchipuram, Trichy, Thanjavur, Madurai, Mysore, Hasan, Hoysala & Hampi, beautiful beaches of Kovalam, Varkala & Lakshwadweep, stay in a house boat on famous backwaters of Kerala, the tea plantations on Munnar and Wayanad along with the visit of colonial territories of Puducherry ruled by French. In fact The Mysore Palace, also known as Amba Vilas Palace in Karnataka is the second most visited monument of India after Taj Mahal. There are many national parks in South India out of which Periyar National park, Madumalai National Park and Nagarhole National park are the most famous ones. These national parks are a real treat to nature lovers and animals like Elephant, Jackal, Tiger, Panther, Gaur, Sambar, Spotted deer, Mongoose, Civet cat, Hyena, and Sloth Bear, and almost 250 varieties of birds can be sighted apart from a wide variety of fauna
